10 houses will be built in only 5 days on the Habitat Beius site

The construction work continues today in Beius, Bihor County, on the BIG BUILD ’09 Project. 10 houses will be built in one week for 10 families in need from Bihor, with the support of over 250 Romanian and International volunteers.

At Big Build the „music” of the hammers started in the morning. Although most of the over 250 people here have never met each other, the volunteers and the 10 beneficiary families formed a real team in just two days. Together with the celebrities present on the BIG BUILD site, the volunteers worked very hard and are now a half day’s work ahead of schedule. The 8 hours of work on the site were rewarded with the awesome sight of 10 houses raised from the foundation to the roof in just two days.  

Today, they will work on the thermic insulation, plastering and installing the tile on the roof of the houses.

The construction event in Beius, Bihor County, represents the largest European celebration of the World Habitat Day, an anually celebration at the beginning of October. This week, decent and secure homes will be raised for the future of the young families who grew up in state orphanages without a home.

The BIG BUILD event is in celebration of 15 years of involvement of Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland in building Habitat homes, communities and hope throughout the world, as well as 10 years of close partnership and support for the Romanian program through the presence of the 176 volunteers from Northern Ireland who are working on the site of Habitat Beius. Together with them are working two teams of volunteers from RBS Bank and Lafarge, two of the event sponsors.

“I like the spirit on the site. We are all motivated by different reasons but we have the same scope- to give these orphans the chance that life never gave them. The fact that we’re having so much fun doesn’t hurt either.” said Chris Fontanesi, Peace Corps Volunteer.

Big Build '09 is a major event of the European countries affiliated to the organization Habitat for Humanity. To promote solidarity among the countries of Europe and the fight against poor housing, many personalities from Romania and Northern Ireland will support this event and will volunteer on the Habitat construction site at Beius.

Tomorrow, in the 3rd day of BIG BUILD, Romanian famous sportsmen and politicians from our country and Northern Ireland are expected to volunteer on the site.

Habitat for Humanity Romania builds and renovates simple, decent and affordable homes for and together with the families in need, that their future is largely affected by the living conditions. The materials come from donations and grants, and the construction is done by volunteers together with the beneficiary families. Up to now, over 1.600 families in Romania and 300.000 families in 100 countries have benefited from the Habitat Building Program.
