Mision accomplished for 250 volunteers

Beiuş, October 9, 2009 – As of today, 10 families from Bihor County will have a home, thanks to over 250 volunteers who have worked during BIG BUILD’09 Project on Habitat Beius site.

In only 5 days, International volunteers, together with the beneficiary families, have finished 10 decent and secure houses. Today, members of these families, who have grown up in former state orphanages, will receive for the first time in their life, the keys to their own homes, during a ceremony of dedication for the BIG BUILD houses. All the 250 volunteers who have worked hard for the last 5 days to fullfill a nice dream, joined the beneficiary families in this exciting event of symbolically handing over the keys of their homes.

Today is the last day of work, when celebrities and local authorities have helped to complete the construction of the 10 houses: Mrs. Anca Harasim, Executive Director, American Chamber of Commerce in Bucharest (AmCham), Mrs. Camelia Săvoiu, Communication Manager, Lafarge Romania, and Mrs. Georgeta Bora, Sustainable Development Coordinator, RBS Romania, along with representatives of Habitat for Humanity Romania and Northern Ireland.

The smile on the beneficiary faces made us forget the hard work on the site, and the accumulated fatigue. We appreciate the opportunity to leave something lasting behind us, and we are glad that we succeeded to keep our promise”, said Adrian Ciorna, President of Habitat for Humanity Romania.

Big Build '09 was a major event of the European countries affiliated to the Habitat for Humanity. To promote solidarity among the countries of Europe and the fight against poor housing, many personalities from Romania and Northern Ireland have supported this event and volunteered on the Habitat construction site at Beius.

Habitat for Humanity Romania builds and renovates simple, decent and affordable homes for and together with the families in need, whose future is largely affected by the living conditions. The materials come from donations and grants, and the construction is done by volunteers together with the beneficiary families. Until now, over 1.600 families in Romania and 300.000 families in 100 countries have benefited from the Habitat Building Program.
