Comunicat, Seven great sports people are training up to do constructions on the BIG BUILD construction site

Beius, October 7th, 2009

Several Romanian Olympic gold medalists joined 250 volunteers, Romanian and international, on the Habitat construction site in Beius for Big Build 09 event. This week, 10 houses are under construction with families in need from Bihor county.

Doina Melinte, State Secretary, The Minister of Youth and Sports, former Olympic and European 1500m indoor champion; Gabriela Szabo, Olympic and triple world champion; Ruxandra Dragomir, number 15 during the WTA 1997 Tour; Nicu Vlad, multiple world, European and national champion in weight lifting; Mariana Bitang, renowned federal gymnastics coach, currently State Councilor for sports promotion; Elisabeta Lipa, most decorated rower in Olympic history and Valeria Racila (Van Groningen), Romanian champion rower, have joined the volunteers on interior finishing work. The participation of these seven Romanian champions brought encouragement to the volunteers. It is thanks to their efforts that the homeowners will be moving into their new homes in two days.

"I am very happy to be a part of the team who has become involved in the Habitat project. I wish that many of the people in need from Romania can soon enjoy their own home," declared Gabriela Szabo.

"It is quite amazing to see so many [Northern] Irish, Romanian and people from all over Europe working side by side with people that were raised in orphanages. It would be extraordinary if we had construction sites like this one, everywhere in Romania, then we wouldn't see so many unfinished houses, ruined by water or abandoned blocks", declared Elizabeta Lipa.

"People are like bees on this construction site, everyone is working on these houses that will be finished in record time - of only five days. We all have a lesson to learn from this volunteering. We should begin to create in Romania a culture of volunteering" declared Valeria Racila (Van Groningen).

Several others have contributed to the construction work today, including Carmen Axenie, member of the parlament, Romeo Mosoiu, MTS Councilor and also representants of the local authorities, Lucian PAvel and Ilie Nicolae, both Councilors.

Big Build'09 is an important event of all the European countries affiliated with Habitat for Humanity. In order to promote solidarity between the European countries and fight against poverty housing, several leaders from Romania and Northern Irelan will continue to support this event and will be volunteers on the Habitat construction site in Beius.

Today, Habitat for Humanity is announcing its strategic partnership with PRAIS Corporate Communications, who decided to support the association by volunteering their consultants in Public Relations, by communicating their activities.
