“At home in your community” – is a project coordinated by PACT in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Romania and the Association Village Life, which aims to address issues related to living and public spaces in Roma communities or mixed communities, located in rural areas or small towns in southern Romania. Through this project, we want to use an integrated approach to the community development process that will help people in the community enjoy generous living spaces and value their natural resources in a sustainable and harmonious way.
In this context, PACT Foundation in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Romania launched the campaign Renovate a house, build a Home, through which they raise funds and constructions materials to improve housing conditions in ten communities from Arges, Calarasi, Dambovita, Giurgiu, Valcea and Mehedinti.
From every community, five families that live in difficult conditions, in mud houses, without windows or doors and with broken roofs were selected. Their only incomes are the social assistance from the municipality, collecting scrap metal and working in the community. The children don’t have a place to make their homework and because of their situation at home, sometimes, they stop going to school. Better housing conditions will mean the chance to a better future.
Between July 2013 and February 2016, this project aimed to develop the capacity to create and support initiatives that produce social and economic changes among the members of the 10 villages, with a focus on rehabilitation and individual and joint use of space as a resource for sustainable development of the community.
The “At home in your community” project is financed by the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Programme, Thematic Fund for Participation of Civil Society, grant scheme for NGOs.
