Dow Romania, part of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), today announced it will extend its partnership with Habitat for Humanity Romania throughout 2016. Dow will support building a multi-family house that will be shared by four families in need of decent, affordable housing in Ploiesti, Prahova County. Dow Romania will not only provide financial support, employee volunteers are also contributing their time and effort helping to complete this Housing project.
In 2015 Dow also donated thermal insulation materials for the construction of another shared building project for four families. The entire project aims to build in total two multi-family houses, changing the living conditions of eight families (14 adults and 14 children) currently living in a precarious environment. One of the buildings is expected to be finished in June 2016, while the construction works for the second one are scheduled to begin this month. It is planned to be completed next year.
“We are proud to be part of a project that not only helps people break the cycle of poverty, but really changes their lives for the long term. So far these people have lived in improper conditions that put their health at risk and limited their children’s access to education. Now they are able to start a new life. Dow is committed to support not only the construction of a home for these and other families, but also to help build sustainable communities by providing access to energy-efficient, affordable housing,“ said Claudiu Tuncu, Country Manager Dow Romania.
“More than 5 million people in Romania live in houses that endanger their lives. We are happy that together with Dow Romania we will take a step forward to achieve our dream – a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Thank you for helping us to provide hope of a new life for families who have struggled for years finding a safe home for their children”, commented Mario DeMezzo, National Director Habitat for Humanity Romania.
With more than a quarter of its population living in conditions that can affect their health, education and personal growth, Romania has one of the most difficult housing situations in the EU. The project implemented by Habitat for Humanity Romania addresses this problem and targets families with at the minimum two young children and one working parent.
Dow recently announced it will be partnering with Habitat International again this year through financial, product and employee volunteer contributions. As part of its 2016 commitment, Dow has pledged more than $1.4 million to help fund a projected 43 Habitat builds and other key projects around the world to serve an estimated 162 families.
Dow’s global commitment to Habitat for Humanity has been a partnership that has been ongoing for the past 34 years. Dow has helped to build homes to reduce poverty and improve living conditions in vulnerable communities in 33 countries on six continents.
