zefiR Build: Together for the community in Piatra Olt

Three families from Piatra Olt have a better place to safely raise their children. Their houses were renovated with the help  of 35 volunteers,  by zefiR Build event, that took place from 21th to 23th May, 2015. Guided by Habitat for Humanity Romania experts, volunteers from Switzerland Embasy in Romania ,local authorities and project partner organizations helped to replace the roofs, the carpentry and to improve  the resistance structure.  Adam family is one of the families that received help and worked side by side with the volunteers. The parents Radu and Irina, with their four children, live in a house with two rooms, that urgently needed repairs. Many times the children had to go to school with their clothes wet, because the rain passes through the broken roof. “We are on the breadline, my husband is charing. We managed to buy some materials, but that is all.  said Irina.

zefiR Build event was attended by Marc Bruchez, Deputy Head of Mission Sweden Embassy in Romania, Florin Iordache, vicepresident of the chamber of deputies, Tudor Udrescu, mayor Piatra Olt and representatives of the partner organizations: Habitat for Humanity Romania, Terre des hommes, Amare Rromentza, Togeter agency, PACT Foundation, Pestalozzi Foundation and SASTIPEN.    In Piatra Olt, roma community has serious problems with the housing. Most of the houses are built of burnt bricks and are in an advanced state of deterioration. In 70% of the cases, the families live in overcrowded houses and are not connected to the water supply network, which jeopardizes their health.For three days, 35 volunteers have renovated the houses of three families from the community. They worked at repairing the roof, changing the carpentry, made the thermal isolation and painting the interior and exterior walls.

zefiR Build is part of the zefiR project: Together for the power of action through which we want to improve, in an integrated manner, the access to education, healthcare and housing for over 20.000 people living in the rural areas, from 12 different communities, in three counties in the South-West of Romania: Olt, Dolj, and Gorj. With support from projects ‘partners, the people from Piatra Olt formed an initiative group that will help on the long  run their community. They will build a turret for children activities: promoting the Roma culture, film screenings and photography expositions. Also for their educations, Piatra Olt community benefits from an after-school and the program The happy Thursday for recreational activities.
