Wednesday, April 11th, His Majesties King Michael and Princess Margareta were guests of the non-profit association Habitat for Humanity Beius. The royal family expressed their wish to visit the first Habitat for Humanity neighborhood and they were very pleased with the houses built here. They were welcomed with bread and salt by one of the beneficiary families dressed in folk costume. At the entrance to the neighborhood, the Royal family received several flowers from their fans.
„This has been an unusual experience! I have never seen anything of the kind in our country”, stated Princess Margaret, unable to look away from the modest yet decent Habitat houses.
The royal family addressed the group of people mainly made up of the 40 families living in the Habitat neighborhood and congratulating them on having such a clean and welcoming neighborhood. The King and the Princess wished to visit a family living in a Habitat house. Thus, they visited the Bacos family. They have two children and have been living in a Habitat house for ten years. Here, Daniela Bacos welcomed them with Easter eggs. Then, King Michael and Princess Margaret admired the simplicity and utility of the house. They were highly interested in the story of the family and they found out about their previous living conditions that had been very difficult, as they used to live in a singles dormitory that was in a very bad situation. They saw the major changes for the better that a healthy house may bring to a family.
„I am happy to see such humanistic gestures that, unfortunately, are very rare”, King Michael confessed when he heard that the houses had been built by volunteers together with the families in need.
The program of the visit continued to a visit to the Habitat site, where the guests of honor, the Mayor of the town of Beius, Mr. Silviu Odobasianu, Adrian Ciorna, Manager of the Habitat for Humanity Romania, and other volunteers in the community put together some elements that are to be used for the roof of a house built for a family in great need for a home, the Manaz family. Adrian Ciorna declared King Michael “the most important carpenter Habitat for Humanity Romania has ever had”. The King and the Princess then left a souvenir signature on the wooden beam in which they had hammered the nails.
The President of the association, Aura Galea, openly invited Princess Margaret to take part in the event called “Women Are Building”, an event organized each year by the association Habitat for Humanity Beius. Her Royal Highness was delighted by this proposal and was very interested in laying the bases of a partnership with the non-profit association Habitat for Humanity.
„I am very happy with the interest expressed by Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret to work with us on joint projects belonging to the Princess Margaret Foundation and the Habitat for Humanity in Romania” stated Adrian Ciorna, Manager of the Habitat for Humanity Romania.
