Habitat for Humanity Romania - Misiune

Our mission

Building homes. Building hope.

Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is an Ecumenical-Christian non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating inadequate housing conditions and homelessness worldwide. Habitat seeks to make decent and affordable housing, a matter of conscience and action.

Habitat was formed with the belief that every man, woman or child is entitled to a simple, decent and affordable place, to live in safety and dignity.

Habitat promotes an open policy: anyone who wants to be part of this mission is welcome regardless of race, color or their belief. One of Habitat official purposes is "to enable a larger number of people from all walks of life to participate in this movement."

Habitat for Humanity's work is motivated by the desire to express God's love through tangible action to eliminate poverty housing. Both the Habitat mission and the methods by which it is carried out are based on several key Christian concepts:

  • - The need to translate faith into action
  • - The Economic Principles of Christ
  • - The Theology of the hammer

Little children, let us not love in word, but in deed and in truth.

                               Ioan 3:18

The Habitat mission is based on the belief that we should behave in a way that Christ's love for us will be reflected in our lives through the way we love and take care of each other.

Through translating our faith into action, Habitat brings together people from all walks of life in order to bring to reality the dream of people who are in dire need of a healthy home and better communities.

The Economic principles of Christ

When people act in response to human needs giving what they have, without seeking to profit or other interests, God multiplies all the small effects of our efforts to achieve the intended purpose.

Habitat calls this perspective of seeing things "Economic principles of Christ." Christ gave us a good example of this when he fed the crowd with a few loaves and some fish (Mark 8:1-9). When we act according to these economic principles, human need and the principle of "no profit" is the ultimate reason for our actions, and God makes the results of our endeavors grow.

We have faith that we can help!

"Cast thy bread and water. And before long you will find it again. Divide it into seven and even eight, for you do not know what disaster may come upon earth ... " Eclesiastul 11, 1-2

The Theology of the hammer

This theology of the hammer refers to the partnership that Habitat for Humanity develops, partnership where theological differences disappear and is based on a common point – we can use the hammer as an instrument to manifest God’s love for those in need!

The founder of Habitat for Humanity, Millard Fuller, explains it this way:

"We can not agree with many things - baptism, confession, prayer in the evening to the group and how the priest should dress - but we all agree with the importance of the Bible to teach others the name of the Lord. We all agree with the idea of building homes with needy people of God and can do so by following biblical economic principles: no profit and no gain. "
